The passing of Chief Frank Kokori, former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), has cast a shadow of sorrow over the nation. Many consider him the epitome of a genuine patriot. His demise has led many to question whether Nigeria has lost its last true patriot, leaving behind a landscape marred by political blindness and a populace on the brink of submission to governmental whims.

Chief Kokori passed away on the day he was set to celebrate his 80th birthday, succumbing to a kidney-related ailment at a private hospital in Warri, Delta State. The Delta State Government confirmed his demise, marking the end of an era for a man revered for his unyielding dedication to the betterment of Nigeria.

The Legacy of a Leader

Chief Frank Kokori’s legacy transcends mere headlines. His pivotal role in advocating for the validation of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, which late Chief Moshood Abiola won, stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice and democracy. Born on December 7, 1944, in Kokori, Warri, Delta State, his educational journey took him through Urhobo College, Eko Boys High School, University of Ibadan, and the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague, Netherlands.

A champion for the marginalized and oppressed, Kokori fearlessly led nationwide protests and strikes as a formidable labor unionist, steering NUPENG and PENGASSAN towards pivotal confrontations for workers’ rights. His principles were unwavering, evident in his resolute refusal to yield to corruption despite enduring immense hardships.

A Controversial Reflection

Amidst tributes pouring in from dignitaries and past associates, the controversy surrounding Chief Kokori’s death has sparked a discussion on the authenticity of leadership in Nigeria. Many political figures have eulogized him, acknowledging his unparalleled contributions. Yet, voices have emerged questioning whether today’s leaders are capable of emulating Kokori’s legacy, with some criticizing the current political landscape as bereft of honorable figures, leaving a vacuum filled with opportunistic individuals.

As Nigeria bids farewell to a son of the soil and an ardent fighter, the hope remains that one day, the Nigeria Chief Frank Kokori fought for—a Nigeria of justice, equality, and progress—will become a reality.
