Afghan women’s team one giant step closer to international return with FIFA recognition

Members of the Afghan women’s soccer team celebrate their return to the international game following exile and a year of uncertainty. The squad, mostly composed of female athletes who were forced to flee Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban’s 2021 return to power, is currently holding training sessions in Auckland, New Zealand, where they will play against the Cook Islands.

Many of the athletes, including the team’s goalkeeper Fatima Yousufi and midfielder Mona Amini, escaped the country following the ban on women’s sport, and many settled in Australia, where they continued to train and advocate for their return to the international arena.

In April, the Afghan women’s refugee team received FIFA recognition allowing them to participate in international tournaments-a breakthrough that comes after much hard work and advocacy.

Despite the difficulties that prevented the women from participating on the global stage for a time, the women’s refugee team have already proven their prowess with a win against Libya at the Unite Tournament last year, where the national anthem was played for them for the first time in years.

For the women involved, this signifies more than just the return of their team. It means a message of inspiration and hope to the women of Afghanistan who continue to face daily adversity. It shows that Afghan women deserve equal opportunity in education, society, and in sport.
