A substantial earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 jolted the Alaska Peninsula region in the early hours of Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Although a tsunami warning was initially issued for nearby areas, it was subsequently lifted.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System retracted the warning it had issued for the coastal regions of South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.
Upon further analysis, the USGS revised the earthquake’s magnitude downward from the initial reading of 7.4. Additionally, the depth of the quake was revised to 32.6 km (20.3 miles) from the initial estimate of 9.3 km.
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. However, a few videos surfaced on Twitter depicting tsunami sirens blaring and intense tremors being felt.
