Alberta Residents Decide Whether to Begin Process Towards Leaving Canada

Voters in Alberta, Canada’s oil-rich province, are set to decide whether to launch a legal process that could eventually lead to a referendum on independence, amid growing debate over national unity and rising Canadian nationalism in response to US President Donald Trump’s trade policies and annexation threats.

The vote will not determine whether Alberta becomes an independent country. Instead, residents will decide whether the province should begin the legal steps towards a possible future referendum on separation from Canada.

Alberta holds most of Canada’s proven oil reserves, making it a major player in the global energy market. Its reserves are the fourth largest in the world, adding economic significance to the debate over the province’s future.

More than 1.35 million Albertans, representing 43 per cent of eligible voters, had cast advance or special ballots before Monday’s vote. The figure is substantially higher than the 810,000 people who voted early during the 2023 provincial election.

Polling stations are scheduled to open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 p.m., with results on the independence question expected in the hours following the end of voting.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the outcome, separatist leaders have maintained that the movement will continue even if voters reject the proposal. The campaign, once considered a fringe political cause, has gained greater prominence in Alberta’s political landscape.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged residents not to underestimate the significance of the vote, calling for a decisive outcome after spending two days campaigning in his home province.

“Vote like Canada’s future depends on it because it does,” Carney told a pro-Canada rally in Edmonton on Friday. The city is where the prime minister grew up.

The vote is also taking place against the backdrop of a deadly incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.  A weekend fire at the military base killed four service members and injured 39 others, including 19 who were critically injured, during training exercises.

Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies involving Canada’s military on domestic soil. He also ordered flags across the country to be flown at half-staff in honour of the victims.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who called for the referendum despite opposing independence, has also expressed concern about the level of support for separation. She recently referred to a poll indicating that only 22 per cent of residents backed independence, describing the figure as still too high.

Meanwhile, Carney’s message on reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States has received strong reactions from crowds in Calgary and Edmonton. His remarks on diversifying the country’s trade relationships drew some of the loudest applause at both rallies.

The response highlights how Trump’s trade war and threats to make Canada the 51st US state have fuelled a stronger sense of national identity among Canadians, including residents of traditionally conservative Alberta.

Carney has also gained unusual popularity in the province, where Liberal prime ministers have historically faced opposition over federal energy policies.

His approach has included greater support for the energy sector, including backing a proposed oil pipeline to Canada’s Pacific Coast. He has also appeared alongside Smith in a united effort to oppose Alberta’s separation from the rest of the country.

Carney has warned that the vote is taking place at the “worst possible time”, urging Albertans not to treat the ballot as an opportunity to simply express dissatisfaction with the federal government in Ottawa.
