The Federal Government of Nigeria had on Thursday, January 26, disclosed that about 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenships in 2022 alone.
Dr. Shuaib Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry revealed this information at the 64th session of the State House Ministerial briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Belgore remarked that approximately, 150 Nigerians had renounced their citizenship between the years 2006 to 2021.
This means that in 2022, the 159 Nigerians who renounced their citizenship had set a record.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, had explained away the high figure saying that the massive exodus of Nigerians out of the county in search of greener pastures was primarily responsible for the high influx of people demanding passports.
According to Aregbesola, in 2022, the Nigerian Immigration Service, -NIS, issued the highest number of passport booklets totaling 1,899,683 in more than seven years.
