Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is primed to leave under-pressure goalkeeper André Onana out of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United, The Athletic reports.
The move comes after the Cameroonian has endured a tumultuous series of performances, including several high-profile mistakes in last week’s 2-2 Europa League stalemate with Lyon that attracted severe scrutiny, most notably from former United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
If Amorim has dropped Onana in a squad rotation jibe ahead of Thursday’s must-win quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford, it is uncertain. The third, Onana, has been ever present in United’s Premier League team since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, and has appeared under three different managers.
With Onana probably out, Turkish international Altay Bayindir should make his Premier League debut. The 26-year-old, who joined from Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in 2023, has featured just six times, registering two clean sheets.
Amorim insists he still trusts Onana publicly, but his words suggest a potential shake-up: “When the time allows, I will choose the best XI.”
United are believed to be in the market for a new shot-stopper this summer, with Bart Verbruggen, Joan Garcia and exciting Belgian prospect Senne Lammens among potential candidates.
