On Monday, the Brazilian Football Confederation announced that Carlo Ancelotti will assume the position of Brazil head coach. Ancelotti will officially take charge from May 26, after the end of the La Liga season.
Ancelotti is the first foreign appointee to permanently take over the Selecao at the age of 65. The Italian will therefore coach Brazil until the 2026 FIFA World Cup; his inauguration fixtures will be against Ecuador on June 5 and then home to Paraguay.
Ancelotti will depart Real Madrid as the club’s safest trophy scorer, having won 15 trophies alongside the team in two spells. This includes three Champions League titles. Ancelotti holds the record for the most Champions League titles, with five. He is also the first-ever coach to have won league titles in all of Europe’s top five leagues.
Ancelotti said to have resigned on his own after the 4-3 El Clásico defeat to Barcelona, which almost surest ended Madrid’s chance to claim the title this season.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is likely to take over at the Bernabeu after announcing last week that he was stepping down from his managerial position at Bayer Leverkusen.
