Arsenal fought back for a 3-1 win over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium as they continued their unbeaten run against newly-promoted teams this season. The Gunners dominated early but fell a goal behind as Southampton substitute Cameron Archer scored in between, Mateus Fernandes dispossessing Raheem Sterling before releasing the forward to curl into the bottom corner.
But the lead was to last all so briefly for the visitors as Arsenal leveled matters through Kai Havertz, who scored from a Bukayo Saka assist for his seventh home goal in as many games. The latter then turned provider again with a sumptuous cross which saw Gabriel Martinelli tap in to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead.
In a pulsating encounter, Southampton almost restored parity as Tyler Dibling’s effort came off the post before the sustained pressure of Arsenal reaped reward as Saka sealed the win with his weaker foot to extend the lead.
The win kept Arsenal level on points with Manchester City and Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League while Southampton remain winless since their return to the top-flight. The Gunners also lengthened their astonishing unbeaten run against Southampton to 29 matches, handing the Saints their seventh successive away defeat in the league.
