Arsenal are ramping up their interest in Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins ahead of the transfer deadline in January And Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, a long-time admirer of the 29-year-old, has earmarked Watkins as he bids to strengthen his attacking options.
Pursuit of the England international by the North London club has been reported to have an opening £60 million bid already lodged, only to be instantly knocked back by Aston Villa. But the Gunners are set to launch an improved bid with them determined to land the forward.
Watkins, who has three years remaining on his current deal, is a key component of Unai Emery’s side. While Villa hold the stronger negotiating position, a switch to Arsenal may appeal to Watkins, who has spoken of his love for the club in the past.
Speaking in 2020 during his time at Brentford, Watkins shared his childhood dream: “That’s the dream, to play for Arsenal one day. But, you know, it’s a reach.”
And the striker is in fine form this season, having scored 10 times in 31 appearances, including a crucial goal in Villa’s latest 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates.
With time running out, if they can even get a deal over the line before the window shuts.
