On Friday, youths from Ugbokpo, the headquarters of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State, seized the Otukpo/Oweto/Abuja federal highway to protest the ongoing slaughter of their people by suspected herdsmen.
In the last four days, suspected herdsmen have turned the Benue South senatorial district into a slaughter ground.
So far, 52 people have been slain in separate attacks on two communities in Otukpo and Apa LGAs between Monday and Wednesday by suspected herders.
On Monday, three people were killed in Apa LGA’s Igbobi, while marauding herders slaughtered 49 people in Otukpo LGA’s Umogidi hamlet on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hundreds of young people set up roadblocks on the federal highway, disrupting vehicle traffic for hours.
Patricia Amali, Chairman of Apa LGA, stated that the protest was peaceful until hoodlums hijacked it.
Mrs. Amali stated that there was no casualty when security officers were summoned to disperse them.
