Officials of the Kwara State Fire Service on Tuesday recovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man from the Asa River in Ilorin, the state capital.
The man, believed to be around 45 years old, was reportedly seen floating in the river before personnel from the Ministry of Environment alerted the Fire Service.
Confirming the incident in a statement released on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said a team of firefighters was swiftly dispatched to the scene to recover the body and prevent any potential environmental hazards.
Adekunle said, “The incident was reported by officials of the Kwara State Ministry of Environment, who came to our office in a vehicle with registration number 17B-D4KW. They informed us of a body floating in the river, and we immediately deployed a team to retrieve it.”
The body was later handed over to the Ministry of Environment, which is currently awaiting identification and claims from the deceased’s relatives.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, used the opportunity to urge residents to prioritise safety in their daily lives and warned against sending underage children to fetch water from domestic wells.
