On Monday, armed terrorists suspected of being Boko Haram militants stormed the Jakana Police Station in Borno state’s Konduga Local Government Area, killing a police officer and a female acquaintance.
The terrorists also set fire to two police and Civilian Joint Task Force patrol cars, as well as a motorbike, while the rampaging militants hauled away some weapons and ammunition.
Jakana is around 45 km from Maiduguri, located on the Damaturu-Maiduguri motorway.
According to our Maiduguri correspondent, the terrorists stormed the Police Station around 1 a.m., engaging security forces for approximately three hours before overwhelming them and fleeing around 3 a.m.
Hon. Abbas Ali Abari, Executive Chairman of Konduga Council Area, confirmed the incident in a phone call with our correspondent, but insisted that he did not have details of casualties at press time.
What they’re saying
“Yes, I received a distress call that Boko Haram terrorists attacked Jakana Police Station last night. I am conversing with the Divisional Police Officer, and I will provide you with the information as soon as I receive it.”
Bottom Line
The prolonged engagement with security forces suggests that Boko Haram remains capable of coordinating complex operations. This raises questions about the effectiveness of current counterterrorism strategies and the need for improved intelligence and community engagement to prevent such incidents.
