Brazilian rescue teams are diligently searching for survivors amidst the debris of a collapsed building in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. The local government reported that emergency calls prompted the response in the outskirts of Recife, the state’s capital city. While one survivor has already been found, initial information suggests that more individuals may still be trapped beneath the rubble in the Janga neighborhood.
Although an exact figure has not been provided, CNN Brasil, citing Pernambuco’s civil defense authorities, reported an estimated count of 10 people within the wreckage. The Pernambuco government issued a statement on social media, saying, “Civil defense was alerted at 6:35 am (0935 GMT) regarding the building collapse in Janga. Currently, eight of our teams have been mobilized to the site.” At the moment, the state’s civil defense has not responded to requests for additional information.
Recife, a coastal city with a population of approximately 1.5 million, has been grappling with heavy rainfall in recent days. As a result, the city and its surrounding metropolitan region were placed under a “state of attention” on Friday, signifying a “moderate to high risk” according to the government.
