Burkina Faso Junta Thwarts an Attempted Coup

Burkina Faso’s military junta had on Wednesday, September 27, remarked that a coup attempt had been foiled only the previous day, by security and intelligence services, without giving details on what had actually happened.

In a statement he junta had released, it had said that officers and other persons had schemed to destabilize the country with “the evil intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and hurling the country into chaos.”

As at the time of filing this report, the perpetrators had not yet been identified but the junta had revealed that some arrests had been made and investigations were still ongoing for others.

The military prosecutor had however, later said that four people had been detained while two suspects were on the run.

Recall that the junta had on Monday, suspended a French news magazine; Jeune Afrique for publishing false articles that reported tension and discontent within the Burkina Faso armed forces.

Owing to those reports, pro-junta demonstrators took to the streets of the capital city, Ouagadougou and various places to show their support, citing allegations of a brewing mutiny against the authorities.

The junta had taken over after two military coups had occurred in 2022 as a result of the mounting insurgency by certain armed groups linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State.

About 50 Burkinabe soldiers and volunteer fighters were slain in clashes with militants earlier this month (September) making it the heaviest loss seen in months.
