Cabinet Shake-Up: A Test of Loyalty and Performance Under Tinubu

Members of the cabinet have been shaken by news from the presidency of an impending reshuffle. While this information should not be shocking, it appears that many of the cabinet members were still unprepared for the shake up and are now trying to lobby to stay in government. President Tinubu recently expressed his desire to reshuffle his cabinet due to the ongoing rhetoric that the “government is not working”.

Reasons for Reshuffle

On his part, he believes that Nigerians are pointing fingers at him due to the incompetence of his cabinet to publicize the workings of their various ministries.

However, he has not provided a timeline for the reshuffle. Notwithstanding, ministers and their god-fathers are jittery about the impending ‘jagaban move’. Previously, Tinubu announced a check system to identify unproductive cabinet members, but the anticipated reshuffling did not occur. The closest to that was the suspension of Dr. Betty Edu, the minister for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Official Statements

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital/New Media, O’Tega Ogra, explaining the reshuffle stated that the cabinet shake-up would be based on the empirical evidence from performance reports the President had received in the past months.

The “Jagaban move” is seen as a critical initiative of the present administration, with many Nigerians eager to observe how the presidency will maneuver its chessboard of ministers. For the ministers, all hands are now on deck, as the president has made it clear that “the buck stops with him.” This presidential shakeup serves as a wake-up call for ministers regarding accountability and effectiveness. It also challenges those whose appointments were favors granted for political support during the last election. This situation echoes the recent rumors surrounding the resignation of Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity. Ngelale, recommended for the role by the president’s son Seyi Tinubu, faced speculation after announcing his resignation, claiming a fallout with the president over ineffective delivery that led to his departure.

Public Reaction

Nigerians have alot to say about the upcoming reshuffling. While some accuse the government of failing to reflect on its own actions, others support the move and are pointing fingers at ministries that in their opinion has not been effective. The ministries closest to the fire for Nigerians are the Ministry of Works, Agriculture and Water resources. Nigerians blames these ministries for failing to tackle the various problems facing the country including economic challenges corruption, unemployment, insecurity, lack of infrastructural development.

Also, the worsening threat from insurgent groups, bandits, and kidnappers has raised blame on the defence ministers for not doing enough to strengthen security forces and bring lasting solutions to this crisis.

Conclusion

As the President prepares for this cabinet reshuffle, there is hope that it will address issues of redundancy and inefficiency in government ministries, ultimately aiming to conserve resources and better serve the Nigerian populace.
