Caicedo insists to Chelsea that Fernández must remain, following speculation about Real Madrid

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo made his wishes clear about Enzo Fernández’s future, explaining that the captain is crucial and urging the Blues not to sell him as rumours of him transferring to Real Madrid continued to fly.

Fernández has been of interest to the white men for quite some time and since before the last World Cup in Qatar, with reports suggesting that he had already told Chelsea’s officials about his intention to leave the Blues earlier this year. Chelsea had reportedly put him out at €120M, although Real Madrid denied this, saying they have not approached him, nor are they looking to sign him.

And with the uncertainties about this, Chelsea player Caicedo wanted to show his preference. “I love Enzo”, Caicedo said during Chelsea’s training session in their US pre-season. “He knows that I respect his stature, because of the player he is. Not as a player, but also because of his quality as a great person, and I hope he stays, because for us it will be important for this”.

His coach, Xabi Alonso, has made sure to try to keep Fernéndez on board, confessing that they had already discussed this. Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica for the Premier League-record sum of 106 million in January 2023 and still has six years to play, though his plans have since come into question after declaring earlier this year his “desire to live in Madrid one day”.

The World Cup winner was due to return for pre-season training later than his teammates after he helped Argentina reach the 2026 final, and with Chelsea back in action under Alonso, hopes they can convince Fernández to stay on as they vie for major honours.
