CAPE Verde’s streets were a place for pandemonium after the Blue Sharks’ achievement as they qualified for the World Cup 2026 – it is the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup in history of football.
Being only over a half a million people in size, Cape Verde has achieved to qualify for the summer’s World Cup, after a convincing 3-0 win over Eswatini in August 2023, a win which sealed their qualification for the greatest event on earth.
This has had the most significant impact on football across the nation, having already ignited the dreams of the next generation of football talent, instilling belief in the youngsters that playing on the world stage is achievable.

Pedro Bettencourt, the president of Cape Verde’s most esteemed youth football academy EPIF, stated that with their qualification, it has raised the bar so much for young talents across the country.
“It is the expectation of our young players that have become enormous, as in we are all a great deal closer now and the expectation of our youngsters are quite big, “he said.” They’ve come up so much due to the nation’s qualification for the World Cup, their expectations of the young have also shot up high.”
In line with Bettencourt’s sentiments is 14-year-old prodigy Yuri Marley Fernandes who envisions himself playing on the world stage.
“This is my dream, because playing football is fun and I can do it, I can even win a world cup.”
With its players scattered across Europe, USA and Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde has a squad with diversity, captain Stopira has had this lifelong dream and now that it has been realized, expressed it.
“I’ve spent all my professional football career with this one dream, I can’t find words to express it.”
The footballing federation of Cape Verde is expected to pocket nearly $10.5 million due to this amazing achievement, the funding for which will be allocated to various youth projects across the nation.
Cape Verde will go on to face strong opposition in Spain, and with their first game scheduled for June 15th in Atlanta, belief is already high amongst the Blue Sharks and their fans that they can certainly be at par with world champions.
For almost all in Cape Verde, this achievement itself has already become their victory and it is an achievement which is set to inspire the future generations.
