Michael Carrick was the perfect interim head coach first day at Manchester United as the Red Devils deservedly 2-0 defeated their rivals at home, Manchester City. The win was United’s second in eight games in all competitions, and it dealt City’s title hopes a new blow.
Inspired by a lively, passionate home crowd, United tried to set the match tone early through an aggressive and energetic display. Just under 3 minutes from the start, the Red Devils came close through Harry Maguire’s shot, which hit the post after a corner from Bruno Fernandes, while first-half attempts from Amad Diallo and Fernandes were disallowed for offside after Gianluigi Donnarumma was initially beaten.

City took control of the ball but were very limited in turning possession into chances, and Senne Lammens was easily able to cope with their few attempts. After the interval, Donnarumma was City’s great performer as he came up with a number of phenomenal saves to deny Amad, Casemiro, and Bryan Mbeumo.
It was not until the 65th minute that the goal for the hosts came when Fernandes initiated a quick counter and ran through to watch Mbeumo finish in the bottom corner with a powerful first-time hit. United looked more energetic and took the game away when Patrick Dorgu made no mistake with Matheus Cunha’s late cross.
The win raises United temporarily into the top four, but City’s loss gives the leaders Arsenal the chance to increase their lead at the top.
