The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has just debunked an alleged press release shared on the official Instagram page of Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari.
In the press release Mrs. Buhari shared on her page on Tuesday, February 21, it was alleged that the old N500 and N1000 notes would still be legal tender up till the next 70 days, i.e, May 1, 2023.
But the Nigerian Apex bank immediately debunked the news, sharing a new release, and labeling the one shared by Aisha as “fake news.”
The official CBN report read:
“For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with President Buhari’s broadcast on February 16, 2023, the CBN has been mandated to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for only 60 days, up till April 10, 2023.”
“Members of the general public should therefore ignore any message and/or information not officially released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject. Media practitioners are thereby advised to PLEASE verify any information from the correct sources before publishing.”
