The Federal Government has announced Wednesday, June 12, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, representing the Federal Government, extended congratulations to Nigerians on this occasion. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance.

“As we mark another Democracy day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity”.

Tunji-Ojo stated that President Bola Tinubu is dedicated to implementing beneficial reforms aimed at revitalizing the nation’s economy and improving security. The minister urged both Nigerians and Nigeria’s allies to recognize the advancements achieved thus far and anticipate a brighter future for Nigeria’s democracy.

In June 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially designated June 12 as the new date for commemorating Nigeria’s democracy.

The 2024 Democracy Day marks the second occasion for President Tinubu since assuming office as Nigeria’s Commander-In-Chief on May 29, 2023.
