The Federal Government has begun moving Nigerians who wish to leave Iran to safety by escorting them across the border into Armenia as security concerns grow in the Middle East.
The evacuation was disclosed on Tuesday by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), via a post on her X account.
She explained that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are overseeing the process and accompanying citizens who have chosen to leave the country to ensure their safety.
“The willing Nigerians in Iran are being safely escorted across the Armenia border by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, ensuring smooth and secure passage for those wishing to leave,” she wrote.
Dabiri-Erewa also reassured the public that, so far, no Nigerian living in Iran has been affected by the ongoing tensions in the region.
She added that embassy personnel remain stationed at the border to receive evacuees and provide assistance as they cross into Armenia.
The evacuation effort, which is being carried out with the cooperation of Armenian authorities, is part of the government’s broader strategy to protect Nigerians abroad during emergencies.
Officials say the move reflects Nigeria’s continued monitoring of developments in the Middle East and its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens overseas.
