Chelsea FC is set to bolster their squad with the signing of versatile Portuguese full-back Renato Veiga from FC Basel.
The deal, valued between €14-15 million, has been confirmed by renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and other sources. Veiga will ink an eight-year contract, tying him to the Blues until 2032.
At just 20 years old, Veiga has quickly risen through the ranks, boasting a season and a half of top-flight experience. His ability to play in multiple positions—defensive midfield, center-back, and left-back—aligns well with Chelsea’s current tactical needs and the vision of sporting directors keen on developing emerging talent.
Standing at 6’4″ (190-193 cm), Veiga brings an imposing physical presence to Chelsea’s lineup, addressing a need for additional height and strength in their backline. His adaptability makes him an ideal candidate for Enzo Maresca’s preferred inverted full-back system.
Veiga’s journey has been notable: after moving from Sporting CP to Basel for €4.6 million, he made 26 appearances last season, primarily as a defensive midfielder. His versatility was further showcased during a loan stint at FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga, where he adeptly covered both left-back and center-back roles.
With Ben Chilwell’s future at the club reportedly uncertain, Veiga’s arrival provides Chelsea with a robust option capable of filling multiple defensive gaps.
The Portugal U21 international’s promising potential and flexibility are expected to significantly contribute to Chelsea’s ambitions in the upcoming seasons.
