After several months of fierce competition among Nigeria’s top vocal talents in the ninth season of Nigerian Idol, Chima Udoye was declared the winner during the finale on Sunday, July 14, 2024. The live finale kicked off with the top 10 contestants performing John Legend’s “Glory,” followed by a series of winner performances.
The show featured performances by past winners such as Progress, who teamed up with the Bigi Idol winner, and Victory Gbakara, who performed an original song from his season. Guest artists like Chike and Simi also graced the stage before the top three finalists performed, culminating in Chima’s victory announcement.
Chima’s stage presence and vocal skills repeatedly left judges 9ice, Omawumi, and Ric Hassani in awe. Omawumi remarked that Chima’s biggest competitor seemed to be himself, emphasizing his potential beyond the show.
With a focus on jazz and soul music, Chima expressed his ambition to use the Nigerian Idol platform to inspire others through his vocal abilities. Twelve weeks later, he succeeded in becoming the season’s champion.
Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content & Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, praised Chima for his perseverance and talent during her speech at the finale.
Following an evening of remarkable performances from artists such as Simi, Chike, and Victory Gbakara, Chima was awarded a grand prize that included ₦30 million, a new SUV, a DStv Explora with a one-year premium subscription, a music deal, and a music video production.
