The Chinese Government has criticised a militia attack that occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This particular attack had killed some of its nationals, and now the authorities are calling for the perpetrators to be hunted down, according to a statement by the foreign ministry on Thursday.
This reaction is coming after reports, citing sources, revealed that four Chinese nationals were killed during an attack at a mining site in the central African nation’s gold-rich northeastern province of Ituri.
According to a statement by the foreign ministry, Wednesday’s attack by armed forces on a Chinese-funded private enterprise had led to the death and disappearance of several Chinese citizens.
What They’re Saying
A ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning had told a regular press briefing that China was in close communications with DRC authorities in the hunt for those missing.
“We urge the DRC to pursue and punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law as soon as possible,” Mao said, while calling for measures to beef up security and protection for Chinese citizens and enterprises there.
“Those already in high-risk areas should be evacuated as soon as possible,” she added.
“The long-term security situation in the northeastern region of the DRC is grim,” Mao had added, irregardless of the ministry having issued several security warnings.
