Prankster Ubani Zion Chibuike, also known as ZFancy, has been taken into custody by the Nigerian Police for funding films in which he was accused of horrible crimes like rituals and rape.
The tapes, according to ZFancy, who has been hiding, were staged and part of his attempt to get back into the spotlight.
His disclosure elicited different reactions, with renowned social media figure VeryDarkBlackMan threatening to jail him for joking about such an important societal topic.
The police statement on the arrest, issued by Force Spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, stated
What they’re saying
“The Nigeria Police Force, through the NPF National Cybercrime Centre, has arrested a Nigerian ‘prankster’, one Mr Ubani Zion Chibuike (AKA ZFancy), at an apartment in Wuye, Abuja.”
“This arrest comes after incriminating recordings circulated on social internet accusing ZFancy of horrible crimes, including rape. These videos raised substantial concerns among social media users.
“Additionally, ZFancy said the videos were planned and part of his desire to reclaim the spotlight after a hiatus.Regardless, such actions carry major consequences and should not be taken lightly.
“ The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting public safety and holding people accountable for activities that cause fear or disrupt public order.
“The Police advises pranksters and content creators to follow the law and be aware of pranks and content that could endanger the public and imperil our country’s overall security. We ask the public to be calm as we take the necessary legal procedures in this situation.”
Final Thoughts
ZFancy’s actions raise concerns. Pranks about rape can be insensitive to victims and trivialize a serious crime. They can also cause fear and panic.
On the other hand, some might argue that ZFancy’s videos are simply comedic skits, and arresting him restricts his creative freedom.
