China has imposed sanctions on American defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The Chinese government announced the sanctions in a statement released on Wednesday, accusing Lockheed Martin of “violating China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” by selling weapons to Taiwan.

According to the statement, Lockheed Martin will be prohibited from conducting business with Chinese entities, and its products and services will be banned from entering the Chinese market. The sanctions will also apply to any subsidiaries or affiliates of Lockheed Martin.

The move comes in response to Lockheed Martin’s sale of advanced missile systems to Taiwan, which China claims is a violation of its “One China” policy. China views Taiwan as a rebellious province that must eventually be reunited with the mainland, and has long objected to any arms sales to the island nation.

Reactions

The US State Department has condemned China’s sanctions, calling them “unjustified and counterproductive”.

A spokesperson for the department said, “The United States will continue to support Taiwan’s security and defense needs, and we will not be deterred by China’s coercive actions.”

Lockheed Martin has also responded to the sanctions, saying that they are “disappointed but not surprised” by China’s move. The company stated that it will continue to work with the US government to support Taiwan’s defense needs.

Implications

The sanctions are likely to have significant implications for Lockheed Martin’s business in China, where the company has partnered with Chinese entities on various projects. The move may also escalate tensions between the US and China, which have been at odds over a range of issues including trade, security, and human rights.
