Veteran actor Chiwetalu Agu has shared advice for both singles and married individuals, emphasising the importance of caution and self-preservation in relationships.
Agu advised singles not to rush into marriage, warning that desperation could cause them to ignore red flags.
He also cautioned against selecting a partner based only on appearance or succumbing to societal pressure.
Addressing married couples, Agu urged those in unhappy or toxic relationships to seek help or consider ending the marriage.
He emphasised that a person’s happiness and well-being should take priority, stating, “marriage is not a do-or-die affair.”
Agu also recommended that individuals thoroughly examine the backgrounds of potential spouses before making the decision to marry.
The seasoned actor concluded his advice by urging against ignoring warning signs in relationships.
He highlighted that staying in an abusive or toxic relationship can have severe consequences, stressing, “divorce is better than dying at the hands of a toxic and abusive partner.”
He said, “Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner, run for your life. If you are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life.
“Divorce is better than “rest in peace”. “I want to stay because of my children”. That was how a lady was killed. Now, who will take care of the kids? Is it the man that killed you? Or the relatives who love their own families?
“Always remember to run background checks before marrying someone.
“He is handsome; I want to marry him”: see you, see death. “My mates are all married, but I’m still single”: see you, see death.”
