Social media has ignited a firestorm of debate as The Fountain of Life Church selects Jimmy Odukoya to fill his late father’s shoes as the senior pastor. The decision has raised eyebrows, given that Jimmy is primarily known as an actor, and his spiritual credentials are under scrutiny. This has sparked questions about whether the church is now operating as a business.
This transition follows the passing of the previous senior pastor, Taiwo Odukoya, who breathed his last in the United States on August 17, 2023, at the age of 67. He was laid to rest at a private ceremony attended by close family and associates last weekend.
Announcing this significant change, Pastor Rotimi Okpaise from the Fountain of Life Church disclosed that the late Odukoya had shared his succession plan with the Board of Trustees (BoT) before his passing. Okpaise addressed the congregation, revealing that Jimmy’s appointment as senior pastor and chairperson of the board was a unanimous choice by the BoT.
“The board has scheduled Saturday, September 30, 2023, for Jimmy’s installation,” he announced.
Taiwo Odukoya’s demise came less than two years after the loss of his 47-year-old South African wife, Nomthi Odukoya, who battled cancer for two years and passed away on November 9, 2021. The couple had been married for 11 years and had two children together.
Prior to his marriage to Nomthi, Taiwo Odukoya had a 21-year-long marriage to Bimbo, who tragically died in the Sosoliso plane crash in Port Harcourt in 2005. This union resulted in three children, including Jimmy, who has now succeeded his father.
Jimmy, known for his role as Oba Ade in Netflix’s ‘Woman King,’ is not just an actor but also a musician who has featured in films like ‘Lifting the Veil,’ ‘I am Nazzy,’ and ‘Oga Pastor.’ Additionally, he is a motivational speaker, a skill that may have prepared him for his new pastoral role.
The decision to appoint Jimmy has sparked questions and concerns. Some wonder why the position couldn’t have gone to someone else, and whether Jimmy Odukoya can truly dedicate the time and commitment needed to lead a church. Many argue that a church should be a place of spirituality, not an inheritance or business venture.
This development has left many both shocked and skeptical, prompting a deeper reflection on the essence of Christian values in such decisions.
