EU Urges Iran to Reconsider Blocking IAEA Inspectors

The European Union has issued a strong plea to Iran, urging the nation to rethink its recent move to prohibit several International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors from carrying out their duties related to monitoring Tehran’s nuclear activities. These inspections have long been an integral part of the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran’s decision came in response to a joint call led by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany during an IAEA meeting last week. The call urged Iran to promptly cooperate with the IAEA, addressing critical issues such as providing explanations for uranium traces discovered at undisclosed sites.

Peter Stano, the spokesperson for EU foreign affairs, expressed deep concern, stating, “The European Union is highly concerned by Iran’s decision to revoke the official status of several seasoned IAEA inspectors responsible for monitoring and verifying its nuclear program.”

Of particular concern is the significant and immediate impact this move has on the IAEA’s ability to carry out its vital verification activities, which encompass the monitoring of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. In light of these developments, the EU is urging Iran to reconsider its decision without delay, emphasizing the importance of upholding the commitments made under the Iran nuclear deal.
