Coinbase sent users an incorrect alert, which stated that Norway had defeated Brazil in their FIFA World Cup knockout encounter even before the match had kicked off.
The erroneous notification stated Norway had a 3-2 victory over Brazil at MetLife Stadium in New York after a two-goal contribution from Erling Haaland. At the time of the message, Coinbase’s prediction market app still showed that the match had been postponed due to weather.
The message was quickly shared across social media, with many questioning the accuracy of the AI-reported news coming from the exchange. CEO Brian Armstrong stated on Twitter that Coinbase was looking into the problem.
Max Branzburg, the head of consumer and business products at Coinbase, later confirmed that the faulty notification had been deleted from its platform and measures have been taken to avoid a repeat.
“We do find value in AI-powered real-time insights, but there are some things we’re still refining when it comes to accuracy,” he wrote. However, Norway did beat Brazil by 2-1 as Haaland scored both goals for the side. The former had predicted he would bag a couple of goals and end the game as their best performer of the match.
This incident occurred as Coinbase is extending its product offering in prediction markets and AI-driven insights as it seeks to increase its role beyond trading digital assets.
