The Colorado Democratic Party voted late Wednesday night to officially censure Governor Jared Polis, cutting off his access to state party events and effectively banning him from their platform. The move comes after Governor Polis, a Democrat himself, made the highly controversial decision to reduce the prison sentence of a notorious election denier. State party leaders are furious, claiming the governor gave in to political pressure from the White House.
The Decision to Free Tina Peters
The center of this massive political fight is Tina Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk. In 2024, Peters was convicted of four felonies and three misdemeanors for using an illegal security badge to help allies of Donald Trump alter and compromise local voting machines. She was serving a steep nine-year prison sentence, making her case a high-profile warning to election tamperers nationwide.
However, Governor Polis stepped in last Friday and completely commuted her sentence, clearing the way for her to be released on parole on June 1. Polis defended his choice by stating that a nine-year term was simply too harsh and disproportionate to the actual crime.

His own party completely rejected that logic. In a sharp, angry public statement, the Colorado Democratic Party declared:
“Reducing her sentence now, under pressure from Donald Trump, is not justice. It sends a message to future bad actors that election tampering has consequences, unless you’re friends with the president. That’s a dangerous and disappointing precedent to set.”
No More Special Guests
The retaliation from the state’s Democratic leadership was swift and severe. Under the terms of the newly approved censure, Governor Polis is officially banned from acting as an honored guest, keynote speaker, or recognized representative at any party-sponsored functions or fundraisers.
Supporters of the governor point out that a state appeals court recently ruled that Peters’ original sentence had technical flaws and needed to be reevaluated anyway. Eric Maruyama, a spokesperson for the governor, pushed back heavily against the party’s ban, stating that Governor Polis focused purely on the facts of the case to do what he believed was right. Maruyama added that democracy is supposed to be about open debate and dialogue, not heavy-handed censorship of elected leaders.
Sacrificing Democracy for an Empty Gesture of Bipartisanship
Governor Jared Polis made an incredibly foolish, spineless decision, and his party is completely justified in throwing him out into the cold. We are living in an era where trust in our democratic elections is hanging by a very thin thread. When a local official like Tina Peters actively abuses her public office, hands over official security badges to conspiracy theorists, and intentionally compromises voting systems, she isn’t just making a mistake, he is committing a direct attack on the foundation of the government.
For Governor Polis to look at a serious, multi-felony attack on election security and decide that nine years is “too harsh” is a complete slap in the face to everyday voters and the election workers who face constant threats to their safety.
By caving to pressure and shortening her sentence, Polis did not achieve some beautiful, noble goal of political unity. Instead, he handed an unearned victory to Donald Trump’s team and proved that the rules do not apply to you if you have powerful friends in high places. The governor’s team can whine all they want about “censorship,” but political parties have every right to protect their core values. If a leader chooses to use his executive powers to coddle criminals who try to dismantle democracy, he shouldn’t be surprised when his own party decides he is no longer welcome at the table.
