Another shocker, as the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) has announced the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor in all 11 chairmanship seats and 114 councillorship positions in the recently concluded local government council elections.
The outcome, though not entirely unexpected given the state’s political landscape, has reignited concerns about the integrity of local government elections across Nigeria. Similar scenarios have unfolded in other states, such as Edo in 2023 and Oyo most recently, where the ruling party swept all seats, raising suspicions of political manipulation and inaccurate results.

The GOSIEC stated that the APC secured all 114 councillorship positions uncontested, as no opposing party fielded candidates for the election. This lack of competition further fuels doubts about the transparency of the electoral process.
However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has swiftly denounced the election results, labeling them as a mockery of democracy and a staged spectacle. The PDP asserts that the election was marred by irregularities and lacks credibility.
Amidst the controversy, the PDP is deliberating on the most appropriate channels for seeking redress, while preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected local government council officials. Governor Inuwa Yahaya is scheduled to administer the oath of office on Monday, prompting questions about the true essence of democracy in Nigeria’s electoral system.
As citizens ponder the recurring pattern of one-party dominance in local government elections, the call for genuine democracy and electoral transparency grows louder. When will Nigeria break free from the shackles of political manipulation and allow democracy to truly flourish?
