Coup Chaos in the DRC: Unrest Rocks Kinshasa

Unrest rocked the DRC on Sunday, May 19th, as an attempted coup plot unfolded in the capital, Kinshasa. Gunfire erupted early in the morning, sending shockwaves through the city.

According to military spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge, the coup attempt was thwarted, with its leader, Christian Malanga, reportedly killed during the attack on the presidential palace. Malanga, a U.S.-based Congolese politician, was accused of previously attempting a coup in 2017.

Attacks on Multiple Fronts

The attempted takeover wasn’t limited to the presidential palace. Armed men also targeted the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a prominent politician expected to become the country’s speaker of parliament. Sadly, clashes resulted in the deaths of two guards and an attacker.

Foreign Involvement Raises Tensions

Adding a layer of complexity, Ekenge claimed that around 50 people were arrested, including three American citizens. This sparked concern from the U.S. ambassador, who pledged cooperation with Congolese authorities to investigate the alleged involvement of American citizens.

“Malanga was definitively neutralised during the attack on the Palais de la Nation, a certain Aboubacar was neutralised during the attack on the residence of Vital Kamarhe [and] the others – around 50 including three American citizens – were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation by the specialised services of the Armed Forces,”

Lingering Unease and Political Turmoil

The attempted coup exposed underlying tensions in the DRC. President Tshisekedi, re-elected in December, has yet to appoint a government, further fueling political instability. The UN mission in the DRC condemned the incident and offered support to the authorities.

“Please be assured that we will cooperate with the DRC authorities to the fullest extent as they investigate these criminal acts and hold accountable any U.S. citizen involved in criminal acts,” she said.

Unanswered Questions

This dramatic event raises many questions. Who financed the coup attempt? Was there any foreign backing? And will the DRC be able to maintain stability amidst political uncertainty? Only time will tell how these events will unfold and the path forward for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
