Alhaji Aminu Dantata, an ageing statesman and business magnet, gave N1.5 billion to flood victims on Tuesday after the recent deluge devastated areas of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Dantata gave the gift on Tuesday while leading a group of people from Kano to Government House in Maiduguri to express their sorrows. He sent his sincere sympathies to the state’s populace, Governor Babagana Zulum, and the administration, particularly to those who had lost loved ones in the flood.
Dantata, who bemoaned the extent of the nation’s economic decline, exhorted the political elites to fear God and turn from their sins.
He prayed for peace and unity in Borno State and across Nigeria. Zulum responded by thanking the Elder Stateman for his humanitarian visit, recognising that it has acted as a light of hope and unity amid times of sadness
“The people of Borno are grateful for a 96-year-old’s generosity in coming to visit us. Let me declare it: Our Baba has donated N1.5 billion to help flood victims,” Zulum stated.
The development came after Dantata’s nephew, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, donated N1 billion to flood victims.
Bottom Line
The combined donation of N2.5 billion by Alhaji Aminu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote to Borno flood victims highlights the significant role of private philanthropy in addressing humanitarian crises in Nigeria.
This gesture goes beyond financial support, it serves as a symbol of unity, compassion, and moral leadership during a period of great hardship.
Dantata’s personal involvement, especially at the age of 96, demonstrates a deep commitment to social responsibility and empathy for the suffering of others.
His call for political elites to fear God and turn from their sins adds a spiritual dimension to the donation, urging a moral reckoning in the face of national challenges like economic decline and governance issues. This message resonates with the growing concerns about accountability and leadership in Nigeria.
