Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer Davido has boldly proclaimed himself the undisputed king of Afrobeats, asserting that while other artists may dominate in different genres, none can rival his prowess in Afrobeats.
Speaking during a recent interview on Apple Music’s Ebro Show, Davido explained that his deep connection to the genre is the reason he remains committed to it and ensures its presence in nearly all of his collaborations with international artists.
According to him, his unique sound and style are what distinguish him in the global music scene. “One of the good things that American artists like about collaborating with me is that it’s either we meet in the middle or you just do it my way [Afrobeats]. That’s how it is,” he said.
Davido acknowledged the strengths of artists like Gunna, Young Thug, and Chris Brown in their respective genres, but firmly stated that no one can deliver Afrobeats like he does. “Like I said, I can’t sing trap better than Gunna or Young Thug, or sing R&B better than Chris Brown, but nobody can sing Afrobeats like me,” he added.
The singer also spoke about his longstanding creative relationship with Chris Brown, revealing that they’ve recorded over 20 songs together. He jokingly remarked that they could easily compile the tracks into two full albums.
Davido’s comments come as part of his continued efforts to elevate Afrobeats on the global stage, showcasing both pride in his roots and confidence in his influence within the genre.
