About 32 people have been confirmed dead, leaving several others injured after a suicide bomber and gunmen targeted a popular beachfront area in the Somali capital on Saturday.
A police spokesman, Abdifatah Adan Hassan had said that about 63 people had been wounded, with some of them in critical conditions.
According to local media reports, the attack was carried out by al-Shabab militants who control substantial parts of southern and central Somalia.
The group is affiliated to al-Qaeda and has waged a brutal insurgency for almost 20 years against the UN-backed government in Somalia.
An eyewitness, Abdilatif Ali, had told AFP news agency that people were currently in a state of panic, as “it was difficult to know what was happening because shooting had begun immediately after the blast.”
Ali also added that some people attempted to take cover on the ground, while others tried to flee the location.
What They’re Saying
“At least five people were responsible for the attack. One attacker had blown himself up while three others were killed.” Hassan said.
At the time of filing this report, one attacker has been captured alive, according to the police spokesman in Mogadishu.
