Nigerian human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has vowed to take legal action against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), accusing the bank of being involved in the arrest and mistreatment of social media personality VeryDarkMan and his associate, C-Park.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Adeyanju expressed his frustration with the bank’s alleged role in the incident and revealed that he would sever all ties with GTBank upon his return to Nigeria.
“Once I get back to Nigeria on Tuesday, I will transfer all my money from GTB to another bank and close the account. Both in my Naira and Domiciliary accounts,” he wrote. “There must be consequence for bad behavior. And we will still sue the bank for the role they played in the arrest & inhumane treatment of VDM and his friend, C-Park.”
While details of GTBank’s exact involvement have not been confirmed, Adeyanju’s statements suggest he believes the bank facilitated actions that led to a violation of rights.
VeryDarkMan’s arrest, which has sparked widespread debate, highlights ongoing concerns regarding freedom of speech and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
GTBank has not issued a response to the allegations or the potential lawsuit at the time of writing.
