The saga of Kano’s monarchy continues to captivate, as the recently deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has finally broken his silence. Dethroned as the 15th Emir of Kano State, Bayero insists that justice will ultimately prevail, urging the people to stay calm and maintain order.

What They Are Saying

Speaking in his native tongue from a makeshift palace where he’s been residing since his return to the state post-dethronement, Bayero was resolute. “I call on the people to remain law-abiding while awaiting the outcome of the legal process in this tussle,” he stated. “We call on the authority to do justice in this matter. Kano is a very influential state in Nigeria. Whatever affects Kano affects Nigeria. May peace reign in Kano. We pray for Allah to bless Kano with responsible and just leaders.”

In his speech, Bayero stressed the importance of justice, proclaiming, “Justice is the way to go on every issue. There will be justice. Nobody is above the law. We will accept whatever the law says. I appreciate all the people who have shown concern. As I said, justice will take its course. We will keep on praying for peace in Kano State. May Allah the Almighty protect us.”

Why This Matters

His return to Kano, however, came under a cloud of legal confusion. Despite a Federal High Court issuing an ex-parte order to prevent Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi. Justice Liman had clearly stated, “Parties are hereby ordered to maintain status quo ante the passage of and assent of the bill into law pending the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.” But who really respects the rule of law in Nigeria?

Ignoring the court’s directive, the reappointment ceremony for Sanusi went ahead with grand pomp. Governor Yusuf, along with traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries, gathered at the Art Chamber of the Kano State Government House, eagerly awaiting Sanusi’s arrival. With the ink barely dry on the newly signed bill, Sanusi appeared to collect his appointment letter, reinstating him to a position he was previously ousted from.

Bottom Line

Meanwhile, Bayero, the deposed Emir, is left to watch from the sidelines, likely shaking his head at the absurdity of it all. This twist in Kano’s royal drama leaves many wondering about the true state of justice and order in Nigeria. Will Bayero’s calls for peace and lawful resolution bear fruit?
