The investigation into Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu’s alleged misconduct is moving forward. A seven-member panel tasked with the investigation has decided to continue its work despite objections from Shaibu’s lawyer.
The drama unfolded at the panel’s first meeting on Wednesday. Shaibu’s lawyer, Mr. Awoyale, argued that the investigation should be put on hold because of a separate court case in Abuja. That case involves Shaibu asking a federal high court to stop the impeachment process altogether.
However, the panel disagreed. They pointed out that the Abuja court hadn’t issued a specific order halting the investigation. Instead, it scheduled a hearing for both sides to argue their cases on April 8th.
The Edo State House of Assembly, which initiated the impeachment process, also weighed in. They argued that the constitution allows them to proceed with the investigation regardless of the court case.
Faced with this decision, Shaibu’s lawyer opted to withdraw from the panel’s proceedings. He believes participating now would disrespect the Abuja court’s upcoming hearing.
While he’s not taking part in the investigation, Shaibu hasn’t given up his right to defend himself. He maintains that everyone involved should respect the court’s authority.
