Severe storms and tornadoes struck areas across at least three states, including a suburb of Washington, DC, on Wednesday, resulting in at least one fatality and numerous injuries. In Livonia, Michigan, a tornado tore through the suburb, causing a tree to collapse onto a home, tragically resulting in the death of a 2-year-old child and causing severe injuries to the child’s mother.

“This is a terrible tragedy for our community,” Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan said in a news release. “Our hearts are broken, too, and we send our deepest sympathies.”

The storm in Livonia tore through a 5.5-mile stretch and was classified as an EF1 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with top speeds reaching 95 mph, according to an initial assessment by the National Weather Service in Detroit. As the storms moved through West Virginia and Maryland on Wednesday evening, they gained strength and generated over 10 tornado reports in those states. In Gaithersburg, Maryland, a tornado passing through the Washington, DC, suburb trapped five individuals inside a single-story home that collapsed during the storm. According to Assistant Chief David Pazos of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, one person sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital.

According to Pete Piringer, the main spokesperson for the fire department, two additional houses in the crowded suburb with approximately 70,000 inhabitants suffered major damage from trees. Emergency officials reported that several individuals were rescued from the affected buildings and taken to hospitals. The National Weather Service confirmed at least seven tornadoes in the Baltimore region, with significant tornadoes in Montgomery County and Baltimore County receiving EF1 ratings for reaching wind speeds of 105 mph.

Tornadoes were reported in Alabama and Ohio as storms surpassed initial predictions across the nation. In Frazeysburg, Ohio, approximately 50 miles east of Columbus, damage was caused by a potential tornado. Images depict streets strewn with debris, power poles snapped, and several structures partially collapsed. Nine individuals sustained injuries, with at least four transported to a nearby hospital, as reported by CNN affiliate.
