Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the party lacks the strength to rescue Nigeria from its deep political problems. Melaye announced his resignation through a public letter shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
In the letter, addressed to the PDP chairman in his local ward in Aiyetoro Gbede, Kogi State, Melaye made it clear that the PDP has failed Nigerians. He said the party has lost the power and direction needed to fix Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.
Dino Melaye Cites Party’s Inability to Tackle Political Decay
According to Melaye, the PDP can no longer fight what he called the “political cankerworms” destroying Nigeria’s future. He said, “The lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms… has eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
After reflecting on the situation, Melaye concluded that he could no longer continue supporting or being part of the PDP’s activities at any level.
“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” Melaye wrote.
Dino Melaye Leaves PDP Ahead of 2027 Elections
The resignation of Dino Melaye from the PDP comes at a time when political tensions are rising ahead of the 2027 general elections. Many politicians are already switching camps, and Melaye’s decision adds to the growing list of prominent party members who have jumped ship.
He also thanked the PDP for giving him the platform to serve in the past, ending his letter with the word “Odabo” — a Yoruba term for goodbye.
Atiku Abubakar Also Dumps PDP Over Internal Crisis
Dino Melaye’s exit follows the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the PDP. Just a few weeks ago, on July 14, 2025, Atiku also submitted a letter of resignation to the PDP chairman of his ward in Jada, Adamawa State.
Atiku blamed “irreconcilable differences” and the party’s departure from its founding values for his decision to leave. These resignations are seen as signs that the PDP may be losing its influence in national politics, especially with 2027 around the corner.
Dino Melaye’s PDP Resignation Raises More Questions About the Party’s Future
The resignation of Dino Melaye from the PDP has raised fresh doubts about the strength and future of the party. With two major figures, Melaye and Atiku—leaving within the same month, Nigerians are beginning to question if the PDP can still serve as a strong opposition force in the country.
While Melaye has not announced his next political move, many expect him to join a new alliance or party in the coming months. For now, his departure signals trouble within the PDP and sends a message that many in the party are no longer confident in its direction.
