Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that switching from R&B music to Afrobeats after relocating to Nigeria was not an easy process for her.
The music star, who previously worked abroad as a backup singer for international acts like George Michael and Mary J. Blige, returned to Nigeria in 2012 as the local music industry continued to gain global recognition.
After signing with Mavin Records, Tiwa said she began experimenting with sounds outside her comfort zone with the support of music executive Don Jazzy.

Speaking during an interview with TVC, the singer explained that Don Jazzy played a major role in changing her mindset about music and creativity.
“It was difficult for me to transition from R&B to street sounds. But when I was at Mavin Records, Don Jazzy opened my mind to so many different things. He made me believe that talent was not limited, that I could do anything if I really focused on it,” she said.
“He took me out of that R&B bubble and introduced me to other sounds,” she added.
Tiwa Savage also noted that she has never regretted her decision to move back to Nigeria and embrace Afrobeats, a move that eventually transformed her into one of the continent’s biggest music stars.
