Members of the House of Representatives during the aborted Third Republic have urged President Bola Tinubu not to allow champions of democracy in the country to die in poverty.

The appeal is featured in a statement signed by Mr. John Fasogbon, the former lawmakers’ spokesperson, on Wednesday in Osogbo.

He considers the Third Republic, led by the late MKO Abiola, to be the forerunner of Nigeria’s current democratic system.

Fasogbon remarked that the actors in the movement for true democracy, which is presently underway in the country, were living in abysmal poverty.

What they’re saying

“As members of the Third Republic’s House of Representatives, we ran in and prevailed in elections that were regarded as the most fair and free in the nation’s history.

“Regretfully, the military junta dismissed us without pay after we took office.

“Today, June 12, commemorates the heroes of democracy who died in misery and poverty.

“The majority of us who are still alive are impoverished, and many of us have passed away without collecting any benefits.

“In the spirit of national reconciliation, we appeal to the president to assist us in the payment of our entitlements between 1992-1993, when we are at the Federal House of Representatives” , he stated.

Why this matters

The Third Republic is often remembered for the annual June 12, 1993, election, which is considered a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. Recognizing and supporting those involved in this period is seen as part of national reconciliation and honouring democratic heroes.

The economic struggles faced by these former lawmakers underscore a larger issue of how economic policies and governance affect individuals, even those who have held significant political positions. It suggests a need for more robust social safety nets and pension systems for public servants.

The plea also carries a political dimension, as it appeals to the current administration’s sense of justice and continuity. By referencing President Buhari’s recognition of MKO Abiola, the lawmakers are drawing a parallel and urging President Tinubu to take similar steps.

Bottom Line

Fasogbon, who represented the Ife Federal Central Constituency, urged the president to recognize past lawmakers in the same way that his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, did Chief MKO Abiola and his running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe.

He congratulated the president and Nigerians on the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democracy.
