What is Dry Brushing?

The technique of dry brushing involves scrubbing the skin with a strong, dry brush. Usually, this procedure is carried out before shower time; scrubbing begins at the feet and works its way up to the heart. This method strengthens the lymphatic system, improves blood circulation and helps in the body’s detoxification process.

The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians of ancient times all used dry brushing but mostly for the purpose of maintaining good skin. Dry brushing is used in India as part of an ancient Ayurvedic procedure known as “garshana” to promote general health.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

  • – Better blood circulation
  • – Exfoliates and renews skin
  • – Reduces the look of cellulite
  • – Boosts the lymphatic system
  • – Might help relieve stress

What Should You Consider When Choosing The Right Brush?

When choosing the right brush for dry brushing, go with natural bristles. Natural bristles are often preferred over synthetic ones since they are gentler on the skin and more environmentally friendly.

Second, you have to select a brush based on quality rather than price per unit. Spending a bit more on a high-quality brush can make a big difference because it’ll last longer and work better.

How to Dry Brush

Step 1: Dry brush in the morning before you shower because the brush helps wake up your skin and start your day fresh.

Step 2: Start brushing your feet and work your way up to your heart.

Step 3: Reaping the benefits of brushing, basically requires you to brush specific areas of the body like arms, legs, back, and torso.

Step 5: Try 10-15 strokes in each area. There’s no need to go overboard; simply stroke the areas enough to smooth out your skin.

Note: Brush gently to avoid irritating your skin. It should feel good, not painful.

Dry Brushing Aftercare

There isn’t much to the dry brushing aftercare routine. Showering off dead skin cells and any remaining brushing dust is the first thing to do after brushing. After that, moisturize your skin using a moisturizer.

For this technique, you should aim for a 2-3 times weekly session in order not to irritate the skin. Don’t use too much pressure while stroking and always remember to replace brushes often to prevent bacteria build up.

Bottom Line

Dry brushing is a simple, old-school way of scrubbing the skin which has been practiced by many people as of old. Its benefits include getting rid of dead skin cells, boosting blood flow, and helping the body get rid of toxins. People have been doing this for a long time, however, it has become popular again because it really works.
