The Economic Commission of West African States, –ECOWAS, has commended Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia for peacefully work out their February electoral issues.
Dr. Omar Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission made this known during the 64th session of the Commission’s Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Abuja.
In his words:
“The authority welcomes the peaceful reconciliation of the electoral discourse in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the peaceful conclusion of the discussions between the opposition and the Sierra Leone government.”
The authority furthermore, applauded the member nations and the Commission for their untiring efforts to strengthen democracy, and secure peace, security, and stability in the region.
“The authority wishes to highlight the peaceful elections that occurred in 2023 in Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone and Liberia.”
According to Touray, the authorities also commended the electoral process that ushered in a peaceful transition in Liberia, and President Goerge Weah’s acceptance of the results.
Touray added that the authority was greatly concerned about the region’s prolonged insecurity and instability. This has resulted in terrorism, violent extremism, and unconstitutional government changes.
Finally, the Commission’s President remarked that the authority directed the commission to tackle discussions with stakeholders about the connection between election procedures, democracy, and development.
