At Okaegben Ward One, Unit 3, Ewohimi, the polling place of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, voting has officially ended.

The INEC officials’ and the election materials’ delayed arrival caused the process, which concluded at 4:50 p.m., to begin later than scheduled at 10:45 a.m., according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

INEC personnel and election materials arrived at Okaegben Ward One, Polling 3 at 10:30 a.m., and voting time was extended to compensate for the delay.

Following that, INEC representatives started cancelling ballots that were not used, while party representatives and voters who remained behind to defend their votes started sorting and tallying the votes.

Additionally, according to NAN, a significant number of eligible voters cast ballots in the Edo governorship election in Ewohimi, especially among the community’s senior citizen.

Final Thought

The late arrival of election materials, a recurring issue in the country’s elections, reflects some of the operational difficulties that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to face.

However, the extension of voting hours to accommodate the delay demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that voters are not disenfranchised, even when unexpected obstacles arise.

Despite the challenges, the fact that a significant number of eligible voters, particularly senior citizens, turned out to cast their ballots is a positive sign of civic engagement.

It shows that the electorate remains motivated to participate in the democratic process, even in the face of logistical setbacks.

The involvement of party agents and the community in overseeing the process further underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in elections.
