The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 19 individuals in Benin City, Edo State, over alleged involvement in internet fraud.
The arrest, which took place on Saturday, April 12, was carried out by operatives from the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to online scam activities.
In a statement posted on the agency’s official X handle on Monday, the EFCC said the suspects were picked up at various locations across the city. The intelligence gathered reportedly tied them to online operations aimed at defrauding unsuspecting victims.
During the sting operation, officers recovered several high-end items, including five exotic cars and multiple smartphones.
“All 19 suspects were arrested based on solid intelligence that connected them to internet fraud,” the statement read.
The anti-graft agency confirmed that investigations are currently ongoing and promised that the suspects would be prosecuted once the process is complete.
“They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the EFCC assured.
