The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims suggesting it arrested popular social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), over alleged petitions.
The report, which had circulated widely and was attributed to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale in an interview with BBC News Pidgin, alleged that the commission detained Otse in response to multiple complaints from members of the public and was preparing to arraign him.
However, in a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the EFCC dismissed the story as entirely false.
Tagging the post “FAKE NEWS,” the anti-graft agency wrote: “The report in circulation did not originate from the EFCC. It is purely a fabrication and should be disregarded.”
As of the time of reporting, the EFCC has neither confirmed Otse’s detention nor announced any legal proceedings involving him.
VeryDarkMan is well known for his bold takes on political and societal matters and has often drawn public attention due to his vocal clashes with individuals and institutions.
