The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has nabbed Senator Rochas Okorocha from his residence in Abuja after members of the anti-graft agency broke into the compound after gunshots were heard in the area. In the chaos that followed, the press crew and other citizens at the scene were forcefully asked by operatives of the EFCC to vacate the premises at once, with teargas fired indiscriminately to ensure compliance.
In a statement made by the commission’s Spokesperson Wilson Uwajuren, the body explained that the reason was a result of the 17-count criminal charge bordering on diversion of public funds and properties to the tune of N2.9 billion filed against the Senator on the 24th of January. The case had been assigned to the Federal High Court of Abuja to be presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo but the two attempts to get Senator Okorocha before the court failed as he was either absent or dodging the service of processes.
At the last court proceedings, Justice Ekwo once more adjourned the case to the 30th of March but warned that this would be the last adjournment they would entertain. It was with these circumstances in mind that the Commission decided to affect an arrest, explained Umajuren.
