A decision has been made by the Nigerian House of Representatives to reconvene for an emergency plenary session on Monday. The purpose of the meeting has been stated to concern, among other things, the recent actions of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele. Criticism and general statements of concern have been quick to flow ever seen the Governor made public his aspirations and purchased the APC nomination form on Friday.
The Governor, whose regime has been described scathingly as retrogressive and detrimental to the national economy claimed that it was ‘patriots’ who had purchased the form for him. Ohaneze Ndigbo, particularly the youth wing of the organization, has been counted among the loudest of his critics.
The President-General of the Ohaneze Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said in a statement made on Sunday that the Central Bank Governor must resign immediately. He said that Igbo youths could not and would not be fooled by such tactics and called into question the legality of Emefiele’s actions.
“Where has it ever been heard that the Governor of a country’s apex will have anything to do with partisan politics?” he asked. “This is an absurdity taken too far.”
He described the Governor’s efforts as futile and only fit to convince gullible members of the public that he was not in any way involved in the purchase of the forms.
Mazi Okwu concluded with the statement that the only option feasible for the CBN head was to honorably resign or be forced out of office.
“We can’t afford to continue to retain a card-carrying member of the APC as CBN Governor… We have information on how he has been romancing politicians in APC. Shall he fail to resign, Nigerians will hear more about him.”
